Chart of the northern Philippines from Cebu to Luzon. Of these islands, only Luzon is portrayed with relative accuracy and detail. Accuracy decreases as one moves farther south - Leyte is disproportionately wide and Cebu noticeably shortened.

The chart shows the route of the Manila galleons through the Philippines, and in particular, of the Nuestra Senora de Covadonga. This vessel was carrying an immense treasure from Manila to Mexico when Commodore George Anson captured it in 1743 off the coast of Samar Island. For Anson, this was the culmination of a four year voyage of enormous hardship and adventure, described in his A Voyage Round the World in the Years MDCCXL,I,II,III,IV. The chart was first published as part of that work in 1748, and this example is from a later Dutch edition.
