Three maps on one page showing the North Africa coast. Barbaria covers the entire coast, a smaller detail map shows the Gulf of Tunis, and a third map shows the Nile delta. Drawn by Gerhard Mercator, Barbaria show the region, as it looked in the late 16th century. At this time, Spain exercised control over port cities in northern Morocco; it’s control is shown here as more extensive, covering the entire northern half of the country. The map of the Gulf of Tunis celebrates the conquest of Tunis in 1535 by the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V, curbing the piracy of Barbarossa.
