Accuratissima Brasiliae Tabula

Hondius. H.
Accuratissima Brasiliae Tabula, c. 1630
15 x 19 in.
Old (though probably not original) hand color.
Better than Very Good, with remnants of mounting tape on verso.

Early and remarkably accurate map of Brazil showing many settlements and coastal features, as well as the hereditary captaincies existing during the 17th century. The named cities include Sao Sebastian (Rio de Janeiro), Sao Paulo, Pernambuco (Recife) and Parayba (Joćo Pessoa). Virtually nothing is known of the interior, shown simply as a region of mountains and forests interspersed with scenes of native life. Two small inset maps show the Baya de Todos Sanctos and Pernambuco, areas of early Dutch conquest.
