Map of Sumatra, also showing the tip of the Malay Peninsula and the Straits of Singapore. Jacques Bellin was Hydrographer in the French Dépôt de la Marine. With access to the latest navigational reports, he produced a great many maps and charts of excellent quality. This is an unusually detailed map of the area, showing many coastal features, shoals, banks and small islands. A legend lower right gives the local terms for river, cape and island. and it advises that the interior of the island and its river courses are unknown
