Portugalliae et Algarbiae . . ., 1716
19.25 x 22 in.
Original outline and wash color.
Very Good, with a small spot in the inset map.

Large, detailed map of Portugal and adjacent provinces of Spain, with an inset map of coastal Brazil. The title of the map refers to the position of the Algarve as a semi-autonomous region within Portugal.

The map of Portugal is colored by province and the map of Brazil by captaincy. The map of Brazil contains a small title cartouche, with a scene of natives apparently engaged in cannibalism. The main title cartouche is decorated with figures symbolizing Portugal’s maritime prowess. A lengthy note below the cartouche describes the territorial expanse of the empire.

Two sea battles from the recent War of the Spanish Succession are pictured in the Atlantic; the upper scene shows the sinking of Spanish treasure ships by an Anglo-Dutch fleet in the Battle of Vigo Bay, and the lower image shows an unnamed battle between the Spanish Fleet and an English fleet bringing Charles III to Lisbon.
