Beautifully decorated map of biblical Israel. The land is divided by tribe, and shows extensive detail of cities, towns, mountains, valleys and waterways, often with alternative place names. Caves, wells and graves that are mentioned in the Bible are noted. Repeating a common error, de Wit erroneously connects the Sea of Galilee to the Mediterranean.
The inset plan at bottom shows the encampment of tribes around the desert tabernacle. Moses stands to the left of this encampment and Aaron to the right. The Mediterranean is full of sailing ships, some of which are accompanying rafts of cedar logs from Lebanon for the building of the First Temple.
This is one of many versions of Christian von Adrichom's Holy Land map, first published in 1592 and copied by European mapmakers for almost two centuries. Nebenzahl, pp. 94, 132-133. |
