Superb small map of the Great Lakes from France’s first “Ingénieur hydrographe de la Marine.” Lake Ontario and Lake Erie are greatly undersized, and the shape of Lake Huron is still quite inaccurate. The mythical St. Louis River flows west from Lake Superior, which contains four fictitious islands. We see a number of Indian territories and the source of many place names in the Upper Midwest, including Chicago and Detroit.
