Large format map of 18th century India, with multiple insets. D’Anville was a scrupulously careful cartographer, and his work formed the basis for subsequent accurate maps of India. This map draws from numerous sources, including Ptolemy, Turkish and Indian geographies, and Jesuit surveys, specifically the work of Bouchet in 1719 and Boudier in 1734. Reflecting the state of knowledge of this area at mid-century, the map show excellent detail of Southern India and coastlines, but a conspicuous absence of place names for the interior north. Insets include the environs of Goa and a wonderfully detailed depiction of the entrance to the Hugli River.
On four sheets joined to form two. Images are approx. 17.25 x 40.25 in. top and 19.25 x 41 in. bottom.
