An interesting and attractive map incorporating new knowledge of the Pacific recently gained from Captain Cook’s First and Second voyages. The Eastern coastline of Australia is now charted, as are New Zealand and New Caledonia. The map was drawn prior to the completion of the Third voyage, and as a result, the northwest coast of North America is shown as largely uncertain. The claimed (but fictitious) discoveries of Admiral de Fonte are noted but not drawn. Tasmania is still shown attached to Australia. Similarly, Hokkaido and Sakhalin Island were only partially explored and thought to be attached.
The map was intended primarily for teaching geography. It was published in three variations, each showing a different means of dividing the world’s populations by physical or cultural characteristics. This version is colored to show a division by facial type.
