Beautiful map of the Holy Land by Ortelius, based on Tilleman Stella’s maps of 1552 and 1557. Stella was a German mathematician, geographer and humanist who refined and reinterpreted the earlier work of Jacob Ziegler. The result is a map ultimately based on Ptolemy, but carefully adjusted in accordance with other ancient and modern sources.

Many biblical place are indicated, with a symbol key distinguishing, inter alia, major and minor cities, villages, and sacred cities or cities of refuge. Latin text on verso.

This map is from the Parergon, a series of historical maps by Ortelius covering sacred and secular geography. These maps were first added to Ortelius’s Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, in 1579. They were published both as an Appendix to the Theatrum and separately through 1624.
