Joris Carolus drew this map of Iceland in the 1620s, and it remained the model for maps of the island throughout the 17th and much of the 18th centuries. Iceland is shown divided into its fiordung or quarters. Reykjavik has not yet been founded, and instead prominence is given to Skálholt and Hólar, which were important religious, political and educational centers. Also prominent is Mt. Hekla, Iceland’s most active volcano, shown spewing flames.
