A map of the Netherlands as known in the 18th century (also called the Spanish Netherlands or Southern Netherlands), consisting of modern day Belgium, Luxembourg and southern Holland. There is good detail of cities, towns, villages, topographical features and river systems. The title cartouche contains military themes, alluding to the fact that the country had been a battleground of European conflicts for almost two centuries. Emanuel Bowen was a successful London mapmaker and publisher, who produced some of the best English maps of the 18th century. He was appointed engraver of maps to both George II and Louis XV. |
