A wonderfully detailed map of China, with a particularly impressive title cartouche. We see a multitude of cities, towns, and topographical features, and also the locations of forts, signal posts, and gold, silver, iron and tin mines. The first state of this map was published in 1730, shortly before the results of recent Jesuit surveys became widely available. Hence, the geography is quite dated, ultimately derived from the Blaeu-Martini model of the previous century. The title cartouche includes several allegorical figures, including a seated Europa surrounded by the riches of the Orient. |
