Map of 18th century Peru from the Equator to the Tropic of Capricorn, comprising present-day Peru, southern Ecuador and parts of Chile and Bolivia. Oriented with East on top, the map graphically depicts the mountainous terrain of the region. Provinces are named, as are numerous cities, towns and villages. An attempt is made to delineate the major river systems, but these are not yet well understood. The interesting title cartouche, full of martial themes, shows a European dealing with natives on one side and a llama on the other.
Pieter van der Aa was a prolific Dutch mapmaker and publisher working in the early part of the 18th century. His maps, though not original, are sought after for their pleasing decoration. Although his cartographic output was extensive, the atlases seem to have been published in limited quantities, and the result is that his maps are today rather scarce.
