9 x 14 in.

Beautifully engraved map on a north polar projection showing the first circumnavigation of the world by Magellan’s ship Victoria. Two large cartouches, one showing the ship and the other a procession of torchbearers. Along the voyage track are various dates, showing the ship’s progress through an oceans populated by flying fish and sea monsters. California is an island. Off the northeast coast of Asia the major landmasses are Japan, Iedzo and part of the mythical Compagnie Land. The coastlines of New Guinea and Oceania are only vaguely understood, with Australia’s Carpentaria Bay attached to New Guinea, and an indistinct New Zealand.

Shirley, #626.
