Large-scale map of Southern Africa by the great French cartographer, Guillaume de l’Isle. The extent to which this was still the Dark Continent is evident from the several river sources and outlet described as unknown or uncertain. The map includes extensive commentary on peoples, regions, rivers and other geographic features.
Published in Amsterdam by Covens and Mortier, this is a re-engraved edition of de l’Isle’s map of 1708.
