Homann Heirs/ Haas. J.
Africa Secundum legitimas Projectionis Stereographicae regulas, 1740
18 x 21.5 in.
Original body and outline color, uncolored cartouche.
Almost Fine.

A relatively up- to-date map of Africa based on Guillaume de l’Isle’s map of 1722. At this point in the 18th century there is greater concern for scientific accuracy in mapping the African interior. Discarding the outdated Ptolemaic geography, large areas of the continent are blank, and where river courses are unknown, they are simply omitted. The Senegal and Niger Rivers have been differentiated, correcting earlier errors. The source of the Blue Nile is shown in Abyssinia, but the source of the White Nile has not yet been discovered, and the great lakes of East Africa are shown as a single Lake Maravi. A striking feature of the map is the large cartouche showing European and Eastern visitors mingling with native Africans. They are surrounded by a variety of fauna, including an elephant, a rhinoceros, and several lions.

This copy of the map is from the third edition, with the cartouche refreshed and “D A Haues Sculp” within the bottom right border.

Tooley, p. 52.
