This map precedes by about a decade the French surveys which began to give an accurate picture of Southeast Asia. The courses of the great rivers of Southeast Asia are not known, and all except the Mekong are shown as having their source in the mythical Lake Chiamay (Chiang Mai) in the Himalayas.
An interesting feature in India is the depiction of the royal road of the Moguls between Agra to Lahore It is shown as a broad tree-lined path, perhaps a misinterpretation of the pillars that line the route.
The map has an attractively colored title cartouche, which includes a tableau of figures in native costume. The verso contains two pages of geographical information, entitled “Description of India”. |
